BSc Hons in Artificial Intelligence
Sri Lanka's first honours degree in Artificial Intelligence
Overview
The BSc Hons in Artificial Intelligence, introduced with the 2021/2022 intake, is Sri Lanka's first Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Artificial Intelligence, offered by the Department of Computational Mathematics alongside the country's first postgraduate AI programme, introduced in 2007. The degree builds on the Department's strong foundation in mathematics, statistics and computational principles that underpin modern AI systems.
The curriculum spans machine learning, deep learning, cognitive systems, multi-agent systems, data analytics and the theory of computing, preparing students to design, train and deploy intelligent systems responsibly. Teaching combines rigorous mathematical grounding with hands-on project work, and academic staff are actively engaged in AI research and innovation in collaboration with industry, government and international research communities.
Graduates leave equipped with the analytical capability, creativity and ethical awareness to develop innovative AI solutions for real-world challenges across healthcare, environment, industry and finance, and to pursue further study or careers in one of the fastest-growing fields in technology.
